Samsung G800 Joins T-mobile - Samsung Sgh G800 UK

After the success of the Samsung G600 the manufacturer has now launched a direct upgrade, the Samsung G800.

Although very different in appearance, the new Samsung G800 still features a 5.0 megapixel camera however the new handset has had some extra technology added to its portfolio.

Originally released on O2 and Vodafone the Samsung G800 has now made its way onto the T-Mobile UK network, this is good news for consumers as the new network offers a mix of minutes and text rather than the set amounts offered by the other networks.

Briefly, T-Mobile charge a monthly line rental charge which then comes with a set monetary amount of minutes and text, this means that the customer can use this amount for both minutes and text until the amount has been exhausted and charges will be applied.

With the other UK networks customers are given a set amount of minutes and text so even if all og the minutes have been used and the customer still has lots of text messages left the network will still start to charge for the extra minutes.

T-Mobile have named these tariffs Flext which means flexible, very apt and very good value for consumers.

The Samsung G800 has a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, 3x optical zoom and xenon flash. The camera is the most advanced to date on a Samsung phone, it has digital image stabilisation, red-eye reduction, wide dynamic range and face detection. The special casing ensures good grip, and the lens and flash are protected by a stylish lens lid. The G800 is a 3G phone, which means fast web browsing, video streaming and music downloads. It also has HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) for even higher data downloads with speeds of up to 3.6 Mbit/sec. Other features include TV out for viewing images and videos on your big screen, FM Radio, a good music player, decent video recording and a unique dual Bluetooth mode which means you can connect to another Bluetooth device while you are listening to music wirelessly.

So with the launch of the new Samsung G800 on T-Mobile customers benefit from both the latest mobile phones camera technology and great value tariffs.

Samsung G800 Review - a Heavyweight Contender

The Samsung G800 is one of the main handsets which I’ve been looking forward to scrutinising since its announcement. Obviously the main attraction (and marketing angle) is it being the first of the 5 Mega Pixel cameraphones to come with optical zoom, but obviously that doesn’t even cover half the story. Much in the same vein as the U600/U700 set; the G800 is the upgrade to the G600 and adds 3G into the list of features (amongst other things.)

The first thing to focus on is the dimensions of the G800 when compared with the G600. Frankly, there is no comparison to be made as where the G600 is sleek and compact, the G800 goes in a different direction and tips the scales at a whopping 134 grams, exceeding its predecessor by 30 grams. It’s also thicker though not quite as much as I was expecting, with the G800 at 18.9mm thick, only 3.9mm thicker than the G600. Overall the construction is actually very good; the slider is solid and everything else feels relatively secure, though for something that weighs this much, I would expect that.

A little concerning is the fact that extremely glossy materials have been used all over the G800, resulting in fingerprint marks becoming very prominent. Mind you, this issue pales in significance when seeing what the use of overly-glossy materials does to the display. In the G600, (a phone I have owned for a few months now) the display quality was excellent and also included a light sensor so that it could cope with all kinds of lighting variants. The G800 seems to me like a step backwards as the legibility when under any form of light is practically zero.

In keeping with the negative stance, the User Interface (UI) is much more basic than I expected. It has some similarities with the UI seen on the G600, but the fact is the G800’s reputedly inferior brother has a more advanced version and does a much better job.

The main attraction of the G800 will obviously be the camera with its 3X Optical Zoom, but when put to the test against various other similarly spec’d devices, including the G600 the results were a little startling. Considering the G800 is meant to be Samsung’s premier cameraphone, I was surprised to see that the G600 seems to develop equal or better images around 75% of all the time.

In conclusion, the G800’s bad points do let it down quite severely. The difficulty involved in reading the screen when under bright sunlight is sure to irritate many and the weight issue is enough to make the G800 classifiable as a dangerous weapon. Though this is probably down to the mechanics needed for the Optical Zoom feature, its lack of effectiveness doesn’t really warrant its inclusion or the detrimental effect it has.

The Samsung G800 is by no means a bad phone; it’s just the fact that it isn’t anywhere near as good as it could have been. Considering what it had to build on with the G600’s undoubted success, the fact that the ‘less powerful’ handset eclipses it on so many key factors means that it cannot be classed as anything other than a disappointment.

the Samsung G800 is available on a wide-range of mobile phone offers with various networks.

Samsung G800: Born With Amazing Features

Samsung's latest flagship product, the G800, was the world's first phone to have a 5 megapixel camera. Set to counter the launch of the N95 by Nokia, this handset did not get as much attention as it deserved but has the potential to be a sure-shot winner. The reason being that it can be positioned in the same price bracket as the N95, and has dimensions almost identical to the power packet handset from Nokia.

The most prominent feature of Samsung g800 is, of course, its camera, so let's talk about that first. The zoom feature is impeccable, with a 3X optical zoom, and the photograph does not lose focus after the zoom feature is used, something that Nokia can not boast of. It is a beautifully designed slider phone that has 160MB of internal memory with an external slot to extend it further, Bluetooth connectivity, accelerated 3G, an MP3 player, video player(with recording and streaming) and an FM radio. The phone measures 101x51.1x18 mm and weighs 146 grams; quite reasonable, considering its features. The lens is situated at the back and gives the look of a digital camera when viewed from that angle; the phone also carries a Graphical User Interface which provides the same features as any digital camera would an on-screen display shows various camera indicators on the 2.4†LCD display which displays upto 262k colours on a resolution of 320X240 pixels.

With features like an in-built picture editor, direct printing is possible to a Pictbridge compatible printer. Video editing is also provided. The phone basically seems to be a camera oriented one but has many other features as well. The MP3 player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, 3-AAC+, WMA formats and wireless Bluetooth stereo headsets. The phone comes with a WAP browser which supports RSS feeds and works on a tri-band GSM network.

Samsung G800 - Worth the Hype ?

Samsung have soared in popularity within the UK over the last few years. Delivering quality products with realistic pricing means they have leapt above rivals such as Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Their reputation for high end sliding phones has produced some superb examples in the past - but now we bring you slap bang up to date with the Samsung SGH-G800 a 5 megapixel 3G camera phone with just about every feature you could ever want !

I've been testing the handset over the last few weeks. The camera is obviously the strong selling point for this mobile and it functions superbly. Crisp clear photo's and video are just a click away and you can easily transfer your files afterwards via Bluetooth or use the TV out function and watch your exploits on your television from the comforts of your armchair - cool ! With a xenon flash, 3x optical zoom and auto focus, you'll never take a bad picture again. The video functions as you expect or equally commendable and offer all popular formats to choose from. Thankfully, memory will never be an issue for you with the G800 as it not only has 110Mb embedded, it also has expandable memory via microSD up to 4Gb - more than enough for me that's for sure.

I've owned quite a few samsung's over the last few years such as a D500, D900i and a U600 and was happy to see the old familiar menu system that i've become accustomed to when the G800 powered up. The menu on any Samsung is very intuitive and simple to get from one place to another.

Aside from all the usual fun items such as games, the G800 is a good business device too. With Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Document Viewer, Mobile Printing, Voice Memo & Voice Mail it's sure to help any worker arrange their busy schedules.

The only downside to the G800 i can think of is it's size. Now, don't get me wrong this is not a big clunker of a mobile phone it is fairly small at 101.5 x 52 x 18.8 mm and weighing 129g - it's just that compared to the previous models i've owned (listed above) it's fairly thick and heavy to what i've become accustomed too that's all. But, taking into account that this has twice the features, you have to understand that the technology has to be crammed in somewhere !

All in all, the G800 is a top quality phone that i'm more than happy with !

Released towards the end of 2007, the Samsung G800 is quite simply one of the sexiest and BEST cameraphones currently available in the UK. There's no denying it looks the part, with brushed metallic body subtly gleaming in the light. Combined with the mirrored front, it makes the G800 a joy to behold. But despite looking pantswettingly sexy, it really is a phone that's designed to do a very specific job. It's a cameraphone, and it sets out to be the absolute best cameraphone it can be.

Key to that is the simple fact that it weighs in at a huge 5 megapixels. Since there are only about 7 phones on the market in the UK that have a comparable camera, it's not got a huge amount of competition, but the competition it DOES have is tight. It's up against the Sony Ericsson K860i, the Nokia N95, the LG Viewty and other similar powerhouse cameraphones. But the G800 has a couple of secret wepaones up its sleeve, starting with the 3x zoom. And unlike ALL the other 5MP phones on the market, it's NOT digital zoom. Oh no, it's OPTICAL zoom, and it's the first 5MP phone to have it. Not only that, but with face recognition built in (which has to be seen to be believed, it's quite clear the G800 can hold its own against its rivals.

So, that's the cameraphone angle taken care of, but what have Samsung got planned for another emerging sector: the fashion phone? Simple. Do the same thing as LG did with the Prada, and sign up one of the biggest fashion houses in the business. And hence, we get the Samsung Armani, a phone they have high hopes for. You can tell by the way they call it their "iPhone-killer". And it's certainly based along similar lines, with a full touchscreen interface (which, again, simply has to be experienced to be believed), 3 megapixel camera and gorgeous, exclusive looks. There's no denying it's a lovely phone to use, and let's face it, that exclusive 'Armani' badge is going to sway a LOT of people's heads!

So, all in all, it's fair to say that with the Samsung G800 and Samsung Armani, they've certainly made a very good start to 2008. I can't wait to see what other beauties they've got up their sleeves, later in the year!
